"Must make a new OS (PowerPC native)"
James Milner (Voter #236) said :
"I hope this has a massive effect on the future of the Amiga!"
Jens Larsson (Voter #237) said :
"The 680x0 CPU is dead, we should now take the big step into the future with
the PPC Processors.
A new OS is really important, Phase 5's A\Box OS is probably the best OS I
have ever read about, they got the point. Unix+AmigaOS = Great! Take the
best parts from each OS."
Luethje Claus (Voter #242) said :
"I believe the Amiga community can bring back the best computer there was,
there is, and there will be, back to the very top. Let's not waste more
valuable time. By telling the world we are alive and showing the people who
are punished with Windoze what computing could be like, we can get back our
market share."
Kimme Utsi (Voter #244) said :
"Push up the forthcoming Amiga as the true multimedia machine with
the latest Scala bundle in the Amiga. Team up with Scala to make the Amiga
heading into the 21st Century."
Wolfram Schenk (Voter #247) said :
"The new computer should be CyberGraphics compatible, but I don't really
like the API extensions of CyberGraphics, because they are not powerful
enough by far. Maybe pOS would be a good choice for the new Amiga, but I
haven't tested it up to now."
Alan A. Anderson (Voter #248) said :
"The Amiga is still a great machine. The OS is over 5 years old and can run
circles around Win95 anyday, anytime! I have Win95, it sucks I mean, it was
on a 100MHz laptop and the cursor skipped, the modem had transfer errors and
things loaded so SLOOOWWWWW!
Look at the Amiga, 32-bit multi-tasking from the get-go and now with the
PowerPC, it can compete even with the most powerful IBM clones.
Give the Amiga a supercharger on life, have the PowerPC as standard, upgrade
the OS, and ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE."
Derek Mall (Voter #252) said :
"IMHO the Amiga can be saved if a new revision of AmigaOS was released which
worked on : Amiga PPC, Pios1/TransAM, and A\Box."
Mark Dyer (Voter #253) said :
"I know everyone will include that infamous Amiga word `multitasking' but I
personally enjoy the friendly and informative user base, never on any other
computer format have I been treated as well as I have when addressing other
Amiga users."
Darren Cooke (Voter #256) said :
"The onset of the new PowerAmigas should improve things in the Amiga market,
as long as Gateway don't make the same mistakes as Commodore and Escom, and
ask too much and give crap software.
The machines need to have a better standard, and a more advanced version of
Workbench with Internet ready software. Please stick to Workbench as Windows
is very crap."
Chris Ward (Voter #258) said :
"Let's have a decent spec Amiga soon with some high profile advertising.
Gateway have the power, let's hope they use it."
Jochen W. Heizmann (Voter #261) said :
"I think more important than a fast (PowerPC) processor is that the Amiga
gets a new standard audio and graphics. Something like the AAA Chipset. Sound
should have 16 bit and 8, 16 or 24 channels.
That was it. Long live the Amiga."
Per Arne Fl (Voter #262) said :
"Whatever software that will come with a new machine must NOT be old versions
of programs that have gone further in development.
I think it would be better to allow the customer to decide for himself which
programs and games he/she would buy, and not be forced to live with programs
that someone else has decided.
When the last A1200 bundle was introduced they shipped it with an old version
of Wordworth. I prefer Final Writer and that put me off the idea to buy
myself a new machine."
Chris Turpin (Voter #263) said :
"The Amiga will live once again, but in the mean time the Wintels are taking
over, this must not be allowed to happen! We must smash and burn all PeeCees
and raid their cheap and nasty parts for our Amigas!"

"I hope GW2K can save the Amiga, I will stand by it as long as I can afford
to."
Brodd (Voter #267) said :
"Do not build a machine for today's standards. Build a machine for TOMORROW'S
standards. DEFINE tomorrow's standards.
Tabula rasa. Make computing ridiculously easy. Amigans are DIY people. Let
us have a really expendable machine.
It MUST look cool - like the A1000 and A3000 did in their days."
Mike Clarke (Voter #268) said :
"There is no point in me buying a new Amiga unless I can run Bars and Pipes
on it. This is the most important piece of software that I use.
Next Amiga should reallyget rid of the ChipRAM problem. However, the screens
system is very important, and draggable screens is a MASSIVE bonus."
James Carroll (Voter #270) said :
"I'm sure Gateway and AI aren't stupid.. they will make the right decision
regardless of whether surveys like these are conducted or not."
J. Donnelly (Voter #271) said :
"PC's dominate the market because the public have been fooled with the
appearance of power and `quality'. The expense and indeed more importantly,
the inflexible and mind-numbingly user unfriendly system that MicroSoft has,
with great skill, been put to the the back of the prospective buyers mind.
Amiga International must build on the strengths of the Amiga and the weakness
of the PC. Comparisons must be drawn to the publics attention through
advertising and such. The dominance of the PC (MicroSoft) and its stranglehold
can only be beat if Gateway 2000 is willing to engage MicroSoft in a
commercial war. Such will take great commitment and patience on the part of
Gateway but will ultimately be rewarding."
Burc Sade (Voter #273) said :
"I am from Turkey and Gateway2000 purchasing Amiga made us happy, because I
am sure they will bring good things to the Amiga. They started by selling
licenses to other Amiga related companies. And we want to see them here in
Turkey too. It will be so good if they sell their products here in Turkey."
Peter Kolb (Voter #274) said :
"There are fundamental technologies that should/could be implemented:
Multimedia / Game core for OS play possible.
Workbench, the next generation.
Object foundation for documents
OpenGL
Device independence support (sound/GFX)
This list is infinitely long....."
Mitch Goultier (Voter #275) said :
"I am the most loyal person you will ever meet, if a new Amiga comes out
which satisfied decent hardware requirements I would buy it immediately. Any
price as long as it was fast enough. A 3D card will be mandatory."
Paul Smith (Voter #277) said :
"CD-ROMs over 8 speed are just trouble. Meagre amounts for RAM, Hard Drive
etc., but this is an efficient machine. Stuff like a music tracker, rendering
etc. should be bundled on CD-ROM and only installed if needed.
Cool casing (NOT like the Walker though).
What about the StrongARM processor (200MHz, 204 MIPS, 356k Dhrystones a sec.
approx 2 cm square, less than 1 watt dissipation) as used in the Acorn RiscPC
. As those who have gone on a RiscPC will know, the specs do NOT show its
amazing performance.
Hmm... maybe Gateway should maybe team up with Acorn (British company that
makes the RiscPC)
The machine should be very easily upgradeable (like the Acorn RiscPC.. wanna
upgrade, just swap in a new processor daughter board and voila!"
Mark S. Howe (Voter #278) said :
"I think porting the OS to PowerPC, DEC Alpha or whatever must be the
priority, along with an OS 3.5 type release towards the end of this year to
raise confidence in the new Amiga owners. An OS 4.0 PPC based Amiga in 1998
would be a good idea! (And with Phase 5's PowerUp boards, most of the
technology, as well as a migration path, seem to exist already.
OS 3.5 onwards should include a TCP/IP stack as standard, a look designed
for 1x1 aspect ratio (eg. 640x480, 800x600 etc.) Workbench's own multitasking
when copying files for example, should be improved. Whilst we have the AGA
Chipset, release a ROM with VGA drivers (Multiscan, VGA Only etc.) so all
system screens can run on a VGA monitor from startup."
Drew Kraus (Voter #279) said :
"With the creative and loyal user base of the Amiga, I believe Gateway2000
can not only save the Amiga, but also gain a lot from the Amiga in the process.
Though some things need to be changed / updated, such as a multitasking
Workbench, along with better printer output via printer prefs. A scan-doubling
feature should be standard, but NEVER get rid of NTSC compatability! Move
away from the AGA chipset. It is too slow and the color/pixel resolution
needs to be upped. If nothing else, base all new Amigas around a graphics
card (ie. CyberVision64/3D). However, I'm a firm believer that a more
advanced custom chipset is the way to go. But, always keep in mind, the new
"low-end" will be what defines the Amiga and what asoftware will be developed
overall. So, make the low-end pretty darn good.
PowerPC processor, with 24bit GFX custom chips, and 16bit sound WITH a DSP
will be the best way to go for the next generation Amiga.
I'm sure the knowledge base is already out there from 3rd Party developers
that have already been porting parts of the AmigaOS over to newer hardware.
Team up with those developers and the next generation Amiga should be
relatively easy to develop. Best of luck!"
